It was announced on Wednesday 5th October that Daniel Shechtman has been awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his discovery of quasicrystals.
Dan originally found this new form of matter using electron diffraction in the TEM and published the results in 1984 in PRL 53(20) 1951-3. This "Letter" has already been cited more than 3,000 times. The work was sponsored by DARPA and NSF while he was a guest worker at NBS (now NIST). He is now a Professor at the Technion and also has an appointment at Iowa State University. He was awarded the Wolf Prize for Physics in 1999. The 2011 winners of the Wolf Prize for Physics were Max Haider, Harald Rose and Knut Urban.
